Like all other new home developments Verrado was hit hard by the housing downturn. The problem for DMB was that the launch of their huge new master-planned community was just a few short years from a historic residential crash. Things have been tough as Verrado and its developer, DMB, waits for the market correction but backed by deep pockets and patient investors DMB is becoming optimistic as local sales, and the general economy, show signs of stability and future growth. From Arizona home development’s course change with downturn:
“Verrado is not a ghost town like many big developments with grand plans started during the boom,” said Arizona housing analyst RL Brown. “DMB has a long-term plan for the community. It, unlike other developers, has been able to not only hold on but go forward with its plans, just at a slower pace as the housing market dictates.”
Verrado had 163 home sales during 2011, up more than 30 percent from 2010.
In its first year, it sold more than 100 a week.
“We knew by 2006 that it was going to be rough for at least a few years,” said Drew Brown. “We didn’t think it would be 2013 or longer before things improved, though. But every year we reassess and update our plan. We are in it for the long haul.”
